The province Mazandaran covers 23,701 km² in
northern Iran. It is composed of the northern slopes of the Alborz Mountain
Range and coastal lowlands along the Caspian Sea. It is dominated by the green
belt of the Hyrcanian vegetation zone, which stretches over the northern slopes
of Alborz mountain ranges and covers the southern coasts of the Caspian Sea.
Hyrcanian forests and high Alborz mountains contribute to a high diversity of
lichens in this province.
Most of the collecting so far has been done in the surroundings of
Amol, Sari, Ghaemshar, Ramsar, Lahijan, Chalos and Nuoshahr.
