The province of Esfahan covers an area of approximately 107,027 square km and is situated in the center of Iran. Due to variable rainfall, considerable elevational differences and the existence of mountainous regions in the west and the Dasht-e Kavir desert in the east, this province displays a wide range of climates, but, in general terms, it has a dry temperate climate. The northwestern part of the province is more elevated and enjoys more rainfall and moisture than the drier southeastern regions.
Most lichens have been reported from the surroundings of Esfahan, along the roads from Ghahrod to Kamou and from Ghahrud to Kashan.
